Philosophy and Punishment

There are two theories of punishment that, at the same time contradict and compliment one another, the utilitarian philosophy and the retributive.

Utilitarian theary or pilosophy, is concerned with societies overall happiness where the retributive philosophy, focuses more on the crime and criminal, than the effect or reintegration into society.

The word utilitarian seems to imply, we are more concerned with the function and less with the apearance. The acual theary is in conflict with the name. The utilitarian is concerned with the society as a whole working to apear functional by detering and rehabilitating criminals. In reality we are doing more hand holding while smiling at the cameras.

The retributive philosiphy, on the other hand, is utilitarian. It takes a criminal and punishes him for the crime committed, with the belief that he deserves to pay for that crime. No hand holding nessasary. As much as I am for retribution I realise the power of comprimise. If used together these two theories would work well, while alone, each seems to follow an extreamist view.

Until tomorrow. Fortune favors the brave! Samantha Shu
