The most recent Statistics for probation and parole available were completed for year-end 2007. At that time there were much higher numbers in probation than parole. While parolee’s numbers were rising at a much-increased rate over probationers, the overall numbers of the latter far exceed the former.
103,000 people entered the system by the end of 2007. Only 12% were women. The largest numbers of parolees were white men. This was surprising to me initially. My opinion changed when I compared the populous rate for white men, to the ethic diversity. After that, the numbers made quite a bit more sense.
The recidivism rate was expected to be high by the end of the year. The expectations were met. The system saw 16% of prisoners return to prison by years end.
